On employee stock options
A repository of resources to help your team understand the value of their equity
You’ve picked a lawyer, you’ve incorporated (in Delaware, naturally), you’ve met some VCs and raised some money, and now it’s time to grant equity (well, technically, options) to your employees.
But…. what are options, I hear your team say. And what do I do with them?
Most founders want to avoid this conversation like the plague - you don’t want to mis-speak, you’re not ever fully sure you’re using the right technical term, and, well, as a culture, we’re not great at talking about money anyway.
However - you can’t just leave your team without any information.
In an attempt to address that void, I’m sharing a list of education resources that have been recommended by our network.
Please note, I don’t vouch for the accuracy of the links below, I’m not your lawyer (or your company’s lawyer), and this is not financial advice - so please do get your own! Nevertheless, I hope the materials below will be a useful starting point for you and your team.
The Pulley intro to stock options and their broader set of employee equity resources
The Carta “Equity 101” guide and their focused primer on employee equity tax considerations
